Ever wanted to learn your way around the interior of the island? What's that network of trails through the woods all about? Here's your chance to explore the trails while learning about nature and the environment that sustains us here on Peaks. We'll even get a chance to visit the 20+ acre Parker Sanctuary, the Peaks Island Land Preserve's newest acquisition. Our walk will be primarily geared toward adults and older kids (10+ years old). If you share your granola with us, we might even show you the way back!

The 72-foot, 1924 Maine-built wooden schooner Bagheera is a familiar sight on Casco Bay thanks to some Peaks Islanders who brought her here a couple of years ago to run a day-cruise business. Come on down and take a tour of this graceful historic ship. Have a hankering to get out on the open water? Then come aboard and see more of Peaks, the neighboring islands and Casco Bay for a one-hour cruise. These special sailings will depart at 9:30 and 10:45 a. m. and it's only $5.00 per adult (& children 2 & under are free! ).

Come tour this island organic mini-farm. You'll get to know more about a wide variety of plants and flowers and we'll even talk about the medicinal and symbolic values of the flowers and herbs we grow. It's a very rare opportunity to get an invitation to visit House Island and to get a chance to explore the historic Ft. Scammel. We'll take a ride on the Polly Lin from the Peaks Public Landing across the thin stretch of bay that separates Peaks from House Island. Then we'll make a picnic out of the lunch we bring with us (sodas will be available for sale on the island). Captain Cushing will take us for a short hike to the Fort and then he'll lead us as we get to explore Fort's cavernous, spooky labyrinth! We'll depart Peaks at 11:00 a.m. (making multiple trips if there's a big crowd) and return to the dock at Peaks by 2:00 p.m. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring a flashlight. (Kids will need an adult chaperone, but no dogs, please. )

Strawberry Pineapple Shortcakes with Whipped Cream You can indulge for a good cause! Come enjoy an organic Maine strawberry and pineapple shortcake with whipped cream ($4.00) or a double chocolate brownie (50¢) made by our island professional pastry chef, Sarah Higgins. When she's not wowing them at restaurant Cinque Terre in town, she volunteers with the Marine Animal Lifeline (http://www.stranding.org) rescuing and rehabilitating injured, sick and abandoned marine mammals. To "seal" the deal, you ought to eat up because that's where the proceeds are going!

Folks come from all over the world to visit the Fifth Maine and its exhibits, but we've got this treasure right here in our own Peaks backyard. Stroll through time and then sit a spell... The ocean view from the covered porch is simply grand!

You’ve heard about it on NPR and read about it in the national press. Yup, it’s really a museum dedicated to displaying nuthin’ but umbrella covers. The museum’s curator, Nancy 3. Hoffman, has created a collection that reminds us to look for the wonder and beauty in the simplest of things. Every display tells the story behind each cover. And Nancy will be on hand to do free appraisals of your umbrella covers, so rummage through the attic. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find that million dollar cover from George Washington’s umbrella??!

It’s a doggie-wash just in time to make sure they don’t refer to your pooch at the show as a “dirty dog!” For $5.00 you can make sure Bowzer shines like a bazillion bucks. The folks from the Children’s Workshop will suds, scrub, squirt & style your champ and they’ll even top it all off with a bone and a bow. …Now that ain’t too ruff!

Peaks Island is comprised of neighborhoods with idyllic Victorian cottages and unique homes. In our exploration the Forest City neighborhood, we will see what makes this neighborhood distinct- from artist's colonies to contemporary havens of relaxation. Along the way, we will see why Peaks Island has been a recreation destination for over 100 years, and what a century of recreational use has meant for the architectural and visual development of the island. Meet at the Founder's Monument at the entrance to the parking lot. Approximately 1 hour.

How do we bring PeaksFest to a close? How do we show how grateful we are to be part of such an incredible, caring and quirky community? We just show up! Join your neighbors and fellow islanders as we simply come together to be with one another and see what it looks like when we gather to celebrate ourselves and our island. You can show your kids what it feels like when we come together as a very special island community. They'll tell their grandchildren. Feel free to bring lit candles, flashlights, cameras and maybe even a bag of candy to share with the kids.

We'll also be announcing the name selected for the former gravel pit that's been transformed into our new community park!
